Xijing University was established in 1994. In 2005, it was approved as a regular undergraduate institution; in 2009, it was granted the authority to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2010, it became the first private university in China to pass the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate accreditation. In 2011, it was approved to participate in the "National Special Needs Talent Training Program" to carry out master’s professional degree education. In 2017, it passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching audit and evaluation. In 2018, it was designated by Shaanxi Province as a “First-class College” construction unit. In 2021, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to confer master’s degrees.

Currently, the university has 13 teaching units, offering 11 master’s professional degree programs and 39 undergraduate majors. It focuses on the development of disciplines such as new materials, civil and hydraulic engineering, intelligent manufacturing, energy equipment, and auditing. The university has formed three major professional clusters: engineering, economic management, and modern art design, guided by intelligent manufacturing, led by auditing and accounting, and centered on visual communication design.

The university vigorously implements a strategy to strengthen itself through scientific research, adhering to the principles of “four services” and “four orientations,” proactively adapting to regional industrial development layouts. It has established the Institute of Materials and Energy Science and Technology, the Shanchuan Institute of Engineering Science, and the Shaanxi Institute of Cultural Translation. It hosts 19 provincial and municipal-level research platforms and 6 university-level platforms, accumulating a series of innovative achievements. The development of key technologies for controllable neutron sources has filled domestic gaps; the developed switchable smart liquid crystal privacy display achieves precise dynamic control of the privacy viewing angle. The university has participated in the construction of major projects including the world-class super-engineering “Zhangjinggao Yangtze River Bridge,” the world’s highest dam “Xiaowan Hydropower Station,” as well as the “Han River Diversion to Wei River Project” and “Dongzhuang Reservoir.” In 2022, the university was rated A in the provincial evaluation of Qinchuangyuan construction and technology transfer work among universities. In 2024, its discipline of “Engineering Science” entered the top 1% of the ESI global rankings. The university’s scientific research competitiveness has ranked among the top private universities for many consecutive years.

The university takes expanding students’ international perspectives and enhancing multicultural literacy as fundamental goals. It has established cooperative and exchange relationships with universities in over ten regions and countries including Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. It offers programs such as short-term study tours, semester exchanges, paid internships, undergraduate-to-master’s pathways, and dual degrees. In 2016, it established the Hanqiao College, an overseas cooperation base in Singapore, offering undergraduate and graduate programs. In 2023, it established the International Education College to cultivate international students, forming a multi-channel, multi-level pattern of international exchange and cooperation.
